The reason is that organized leagues of car thieves can in many cases decode (read) the signals from electronic immobilizers and then easily drive away with the car. Removing a strong mechanical protection, on the other hand, is always troublesome, it takes time and is associated with loud noise, which significantly reduces the risk of car theft. Car thieves simply prefer a car without a steering wheel crutch.
